Trunk Songs follows a songwriter's solo road trip through Appalachia along the Blue Ridge Parkway in the summer of 2024. Framed as a personal pilgrimage and creative reckoning, the show blends monologue, original songs, and history to explore connections between music, memory, and identity. As the protagonist, Emmy, approaches her 35th birthday after undergoing an egg freezing process, she sets off in search of inspiration, connection, and meaning in the birthplace of the bluegrass music she has recently fallen in love with. Along the way, she reflects on her childhood and her relationship to music as both passion and baggage.

Emmy’s encounters - real and imagined - with musicians, historical figures, and loves past and present reveal inner conflicts between fantasy and reality, solitude and companionship, and performance and authenticity. Humorous and heartfelt, Trunk Songs invites the audience on a journey both lyrical and physical to explore missed connections, desire, belonging, and what it means to live a life in music.
